Hudson T9283 at Thornaby airfield.

On 23rd June 1943 this No.1 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit aircraft came in too fast for a landing at Thornaby and overshot the airfield and crashed. The pilot sustained injuries but his and his crew's names are not yet known.

Hudson T9283 was built by Lockheed-Vega at Burbank, California and was purchased without contract by the B.P.C. It was delivered to the UK by sea, probably arriving in May 1940 and after assembly it was flown to 10 MU on 4th June 1940. It was then taken on charge by 206 Squadron on 8th July 1940. On 24th August 1940 it was sent to 4 MU / Cunliffe Owen and returned to 206 Squadron on 31st August 1940. During January 1941 it must have been unservicable as No.43 Group Damage Assessor's inspected it. It spent some months being repaired and was returned to 206 Squadron on 11th Augsut 1941. On 3rd September 1941 it was transferred to No.6 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit. On 29th June 1943 it was involved in some form of incident that saw a Cat.Ac/FA damage assessment. It was repaired on site and returned to 6 (C)OTU on 23rd October 1942. It 24th November 1942 it was flown to Silloth and joined No.1 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit a few days later on 2nd December 1942. They then moved to Thornaby on 22nd March 1943. As a result of the damage sustained on 23rd June 1943 Cat.E2/FA was the assessment and it was struck off charge.
