Blenheim T2140 at Church Fenton airfield.

On 12th December 1943 the crew of this 527 Squadron aircraft were in the process of taking off from Church Fenton airfield when struck a fence near the end of the runway and overturned. 527 Squadron sent a small detachment to Church Fenton airfield at the end of 1943 where they used a Blenheim and a Hurricane to make flights in conjunction with the Chain Home early warning establishments at Danby Beacon and Staxton Wold. In the main the Hurricane was used with the Staxton Chain Home site and the Blenheim with the one at Danby Beacon. The 527 Squadron records list that a Blenheim (almost certainly T2140) was used to calibrate Danby Beacon on 4th December 1943 and then twice on 10th December 1943.

Pilot - W/O Ludlow (probably W/O Peter Henry Ludlow RAFVR (1281396). Slight shock peter henry ludlow 1281396 / 186281 ??? comm 10-7-44

Wireless Operator / Air Gunner? - W/O B C Martin. Minor head injuries.

W/O Ludlow was posted to 527 Squadron from 60 OTU on 9th November 1943. The 527 Squadron record book states that he was posted to 525 Squadron on 1st December 1943 at Weston Zoyland but as to why I cannot fathom as they were flying Warwicks. He was back at 527 Squadron and at Church Fenton with them by 4th December 1943 when he and W/O Martin flew a calibration flight for Danby Beacon in the Blenheim. On 10th December 1943 he and Martin twice flew calibration flights for Danby Beacon. After this mishap on 12th December 1943 I have not found any further reference to him at 527 Squadron. If he was indeed Peter Ludlaw then he then received a commission on 10th July 1944 and was awarded the Air Force Cross on 14th June 1945.

W/O Martin was a regular name in the 527 Squadron record book until Spring 1944. He was posted to RAF North Coates on 9th February 1944 for calibration of equipment at Stenigot Chain Home station, returning to 527 Squadron on 15th February 1944 and back to Stenigot on 24th February 1944. He returned to 527 Squadron on 26th March 1944. Not long after he was posted to 526 Squadron and returned to 527 Squadron on 12th April 1944. After this I have not found any other reference to him.

Back to table.
