Lysander T1625 at Thornaby airfield.

On 26th January 1943 this 6 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit aircraft was being taxied at Thornaby airfield when it ran onto rough ground and tipped up onto it's nose slightly damaging it. 6 (C)O.T.U. used a number of Lysanders as target tug aircraft.

Lysander T1625 was built to contract 23637/39 by Westland Aircraft Ltd. at Yeovil and was awaiting collection in December 1940 but during production the airframe was converted to T.T.III status. It was immediately placed in long term MU storage. The aircraft was first taken on charge by 6 (C) O.T.U. at Thornaby but the date it arrived is not yet known. As a result of the damage sustained at Thornaby on 26th January 1943 Cat.A/FA was the damage assessment and it was repaired on site. On 10th March 1943 6 (C)OTU commenced it's move to Silloth and by 24th March 1943 1 (C)OTU had moved in to Thornaby, the Lysander was taken on charge by 1 (C)OTU on their arrival. On 27th June 1943, after an inspection, it was found to be beyond repair, Cat.E damage was recorded and it was struck off charge.
