Halifax R9429 at Riccall airfield.
At 19.35hrs on 9th December 1943 the crew of this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was about to be flown on a night training flight when it swung off the runway at Riccall airfield and struck a gun emplacement on the perimeter of the airfield. The aircraft came to rest badly damaged but the crew escaped injury.
Pilot - F/Sgt Edward Drake Steele Tennant RAAF (410105).
F/Sgt Edward Tennant was killed on 1st February 1944 with 624 Squadron while flying Halifax BB444 on an operational flight to bomb a target in Albania from Brindisi, Italy. His aircraft flew into high ground while circling to make an SOE drop. All but his rear gunner were killed and they had only just arrived at 624 Squadron a few days previously. They were initialy buried at the crash site but were later re-interred at Tirana Park Memorial Cemetery, Albania.
