Wellington R1620 at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.

At 11.30hrs on 26th February 1943 the engines of this aircraft were left running on the ground at Sherburn on Elmet airfield prior to, or following a ferry flight with 7 FPP, ATA. Flames emitting from the starboard engine set fire to the starboard wing.

Wellington R1620 was built to contract B.992424/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Hawarden and was awaiting collection in March 1941. It was initially received by 48 M.U. at Hawadren on 22nd April 1941 and remained there storage until being taken on charge by 300 Squadron at Hemswell on 22nd August 1941 when they commenced operating the type. It received minor Cat.Ac damage on 17th March 1942 which was repaired on site with it returned to 300 Squadron on 2nd May 1942. 300 Squadron then moved to Ingham on 18th May 1942. On 12th October 1942 it sustained Cat.B damage that saw it taken away for a repair in a works factory. On 17th February 1943 it was received by 45 M.U. On 26th February 1943 it was in the care of 7 F.P.P. (of the ATA) at Sherburn in Elmet when this Cat.Ac occurred. Cat.Ac damage was the damage assessment and it was then repaired on site. It was returned to 45 MU on 27th March 1943. It was taken on charge by 104 (Transport) O.T.U. at Nutts Corner on 9th June 1943 and sustained minor Cat.Ac damage on 19th September 1944. The damage was repaired on site and it was returned to 104 (T)OTU on 10th November 1944. On 5th February 1944 this unit disbanded and the aircraft was converted to ground instructional airframe 4583M. After this nothing more of the aircraft is known.
