On 4th April 1943 this 18 Operational Training Unit aircraft crash landed at Finningley airfield damaging the starboard undercarriage and wing.

Crew - Names unknown.

Wellington R1160 was built to contract 992424/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd, at Hawarden and was allotted to 51 MU on 9th September 1940. It was received by 51 MU at Lichfield on 14th October 1940 and was taken on charge by 18 OTU at Bramcote on 6th April 1941. On or just before 19th July 1941 it sustained minor damage as a result of a flying accident but no details surrounding this are known. It was inspected by 43 Group D.A. on that date and declared Cat.Ac/FA damaged. It was repaired on site and was returned to 18 O.T.U. on 11th September 1941. Exactly a year later on 11th September 1942 it was again damaged to Cat.Ac/FA status in a flying accident which again required a repair on site by a team from Vickers at Weybridge. It was returned to 18 O.T.U. on 26th September 1942. 18 OTU moved to Finningley on 27th March 1943. The damage sustained on 4th April 1943 isn't directly recorded on the aircraft's AM Form 78 so Cat.A or Ac/FA damage was the probable damage assessment. On 28th April 1943 it was re-assessed as being Re.Cat.B so was sent for a repair in works by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Weybridge. In July 1943 it was flown back to an RAF MU and on 4th September 1943 was either collected by or allotted to the ATA at White Waltham. On 25th September 1943 it received a Cat.B damage assessment during routine inspections. Airwork General Trading Ltd. at Gatwick repaired the aircraft and it was returned to the ATA at White Waltham on 13th October 1943. It was flown to 8 MU on 30th October 1943 and was then issued to 105 OTU on 30th January 1944. On 15th August 1944 it was written off with Cat.E damage being the damage assessment, there is no indication on the AM Form 78 that it sustained damage in a flying accident that wrote it off.
