Hudson P5159 at Thornaby airfield.

On 31st May 1943 this No.1 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit aircraft was coming into land at Thornaby when it stalled, it crashed onto the airfield damaging it severely. Nothing more is known about this incident at the time of creating the webpage.

Hudson P5159 was built to contract 791587/38 by Lockheed-Vega at Burbank, California and was delivered to the UK by sea, arriving in March 1940. After assembly it was issued to 9 MU on 3rd April 1940. It was then taken on charge by 224 Squadron on 23rd May 1940. It was transferred to No.6 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit at Thornaby on 29th August 1941. On 22nd October 1941 it received a Cat.Ac damage assessment which was repaired on site and it was returned to the unit on 27th January 1942. On 27th October 1942 it received a Cat.Ac/FA damage assessment and was again repaired on site. It was returned to the unit on 24th February 1943 then transferred to No.1 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit on 31st May 1943. It was then badly damaged at Thornaby on 31st May 1943, after which a Cat.E2/FA damage assessment was made and it was struck off charge on 3rd June 1943 when the assessor visited.
