Halifax LW270 damaged in the air, landed at Elvington airfield.

On 8th / 9th October 1943 the crew of this 77 Squadron aircraft were tasked with flying an operational flight to bomb Hanover and took off from Elvington airfield at 22.46hrs. While over the target area the aircraft was struck from above by falling incendiaries released by a higher flying aircraft. Despite the damage the crew were able to fly the aircraft back to Elvington and they landed at 04.47hrs.

Scrivens, McKenzie and Cummings had all survived the 78 Squadron crash of Halifax JB370 at Bubwith on 17th August 1943 that unfortunately injuried their then pilot. These three were posted back to 1652 H.C.U. ten days later to be re-crewed, being then posted to 77 Squadron.
