Wellington LN295 at Burn airfield.

At 15.30hrs on 25th August 1943 this aircraft was being taxied at Burn airfield by an ATA pilot following the ferry / delivery flight. The pilot was instructed by flying control to taxi off the perimeter track to a dispersal but between the perimeter track and the dispersal point was a patch of rough ground which was known by both flying control on the ground at Burn and also senior ATA pilots who had protested about having to cross this rough ground earlier in the week. In crossing the rough ground the Wellington tipped up onto its nose and both propellers sustained damage. 431 Squadron were the only flying unit using Burn airfield at this date and as they were also flying Wellingtons I assume this was heading there to be used by them.

Pilot - F/Sgt Frank Walter Joy RAF. Seconded to the ATA.

Wellington LN295 soon went to 27 OTU but was lost in a serious crash on 6th November 1943 following a collision with another Wellington. Both aircraft fell near Alconbury airfield with the loss of all on both aircraft apart from both of the pilots.
