On the evening of 3rd November 1943 the crew of this 76 Squadron aircraft took off from Holme on Spalding Moor airfield at 16.59hrs to bomb Dusseldorf. The crew bombed the target area from between 19,000 and 19,500 feet but the aircraft was then attacked by a night-fighter and sustained damage across the Halifax. Cannon fire to the tail seriously injured the rear gunner in the left foot. Control of the aircraft was lost and the pilot ordered his crew to bale out, two of the crew complied with these orders but then control was regained and no-one else left the aircraft. The aircaft limped back to base and landed at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield (or Foulsham?) probably before midnight. The damage to the aircraft was extensive and it was remarkable that it got back home, it was later inspected and was deemed too badly damaged to warrant a repair. The injured rear gunner was admitted to hospital where his left foot is believed to have later been amputated. The majority of this crew were posted in to 76 Squadron on 15th July 1943 and were well on their way to completing a tour with 76 Squadron having flown regularily since.
