Halifax LK911 damaged in the air, landed at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield.

On the night of 16th / 17th September 1943 this 76 Squadon aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb Mundane. The crew took off from Holme on Spalding Moor at 19.50hrs but outbound the aircraft suffered the effects of severe icing across the surfaces of the aircraft. The crew deemed this severe enough to prevent them from continuing towards the target and they turned around. The aircraft landed safely at 02.51hrs without incident. After landing the aircraft underwent an inspection and it was found that a portion of the aircraft's skinning was no longer attached to the stringer area beneath it. It was considered that icing conditions may have caused the damage though was not fully determined.
