During August 431 Squadron were in the process of converting from flying the Wellington type to the Halifax type and crews were carrying out training exercises. On 24th August 1943 crews were undertaking various fighter affiliation or air to sea firing exercises and at 11.00hrs while taxying for take off at Tholthorpe for one such exercise Halifax LK898 struck a tree stump. The aircraft was slightly damaged.
