Hampden L4204 at Thornaby airfield.
In the early hours of 10th September 1943 this 521 Squadron was flown on a "Rhombus" long range meteorlogical recce to "Position 6". The aircraft took off from Docking airfield at 05.00hrs but many miles out to sea the aircraft suffered an oil leak on one of the engines. A landing was made at Thornaby as a precaution at 09.30hrs. It was found that a nut securing a part of the oil system had been over-tightened and deformed the sealing washer below it prior to the aircraft being taken on charge by 521 Squadron. This is hardly a flying accident but I have included it as it is one of the last Hampdens to land in Yorkshire with a problem deemed serious enough to have an AM Form 1180 created for it.
