Hurricane KX176 at Rufforth airfield.

On 24th February 1943 this 184 Squadron aircraft was being flown on a ferry flight from Milfield to Colerne following a Low Attack Course that the squadron undertook at Milfield earlier in the month. A landing was made at Rufforth airfield in what was very poor visibility at 10.40hrs. The aircraft overshot the runway and owing to obstructions at either side of the overshot area the pilot was forced to continue ahead, it then ran into some form of sand bank at the end of the runway.

Pilot - F/Lt John Peter Basil Almack RAFVR (74735).

On 28th March 1943 F/Lt Almack made a wheels up landing in error at Zeals flying 184 Squadron Hurricane HW728.
Hurricane KX176 was built to contract 62305/39/C/VA by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. at either the Brooklands or Langley factory and was initially flown to 20 MU at Lyneham on 23rd December 1942. It was taken on charge by 184 Squadron on 26th January 1943 who were based at Colerne at that date. On 3rd February 1943 it moved with the unit to Milfield and on paper the squadron moved back to Colerne on 22nd February 1943. As a result of the damage sustained at Rufforth on 24th February 1943 Cat.B/FA damage was the damage assessment. On 3rd March 1943 it was taken to Taylorcraft Ltd. at Rearsby for a repair in works. Once servicable it was flown to 22 MU at Silloth on 26th August 1943. On 7th March 1944 it was taken on charge by the AAEE at Boscombe Down. On 24th August 1944 while flying in formation it collided with Hurricane HW187 so was force landed in a field at Downton, Wiltshire but tipped onto it's nose. Cat.B/FA damage was the damage assessment. On 2nd September 1944 it was taken to Morrison's Engineering Ltd. at Horsey Toll for another repair in works. On 9th November 1944 it went to 22 MU at Silloth but does not appear to have gone anywhere else. It was struck off charge on 30th November 1945.
