Halifax JN887 damaged on Ops, landed at Lissett airfield.
On the night of 23rd / 24th September 1943 this 158 Squadron was flown on an operational flight to bomb Mannheim. The crew took off from Lissett at 18.53hrs. The crew released their bomb load over the target area from 17,000 feet at 22.08hrs. While over Mannheim the aircraft was struck by a falling 30lb incendiary bomb on the port inner engine. The incendiary bomb exploded and blew the top off the engine resulting in the engine having to be shut down. The mid upper turret also sustained damage and was rendered unservicable. The aircraft lost height to 6,000 feet and the despite the damage the crew were able to fly back to Lissett at that height, landing at 02.40hrs.
