Beaufighter JL548 near Sigglesthorne.

On 26th July 1943 this aircraft had just taken off from Catfoss airfield when the port engine failed, the aircraft stalled and dived into ground just west of Sigglesthorne and sadly both crew were killed.

Pilot - F/O John Stuart Wallis RAF (50480), aged 33, wife of Hampstead, London. Buried Brandesburton Churchyard, Yorkshire.

Navigator - F/O Neville Frederick Rogers RAFVR (151030), aged 19, of Haslemere. Buried Haslemere Churchyard, Surrey.


F/O Wallis' gravestone at Brandesburton Churchyard. He received his commission to the rank of P/O on probation (emergency) on 20th November 1942 and rose to F/O (War Subs) on 20th May 1943.


Neville Rogers received a commission to the rank of P/O on probation (emergency) on 22nd January 1943 and rose to F/O (War Subs) on 22nd July 1943.

Air historians Albert Pritchard, Eric Barton, Rodney Robinson and Ken Reast located small fragments on the surface at the crash site in the early 2000s with permission from the landowner, confirming the crash location.
