Beaufighter JL546 at Catfoss airfield.

On 19th May 1943 this 2 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit aircraft was in the process of taking off from Catfoss airfield when a tyre burst, the aircraft was listed as having sustained damage to the starboard mainplane, propeller and engine which would suggest the aircraft swung off the runway and the starboard undercarriage collapsed.

Pilot - Name unknown.

Beaufighter JL546 was built to contract B.85570/40 by the Bristol Aeroplane Co. Ltd. at Old Mixon and was awaiting collection in November 1942. The aircraft only ever served with 2 (C) O.T.U. at Catfoss but the date it was taken on charge is not yet known. As a result of the accident on 19th May 1943 Cat.Ac/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was repaired on site. The aircraft appears to have remained with 2 (C) O.T.U. until the time the unit disbanded on 15th February 1944. The aircraft saw out it's days in long term MU storage and was struck off charge on 28th June 1946.
