Spitfire JL186 at "Newton, Yorkshire".

On 8th April 1943 this aircraft was due to have been ferried by an ATA ferry pilot of No.16 Ferry Pilot Pool, ATA from No.45 Maintenance Unit, at Kinloss to Dumfries airfield, as stated on the AM Form 1180. During the flight the aircraft entered bad weather and low cloud and the pilot became lost; significantly lost. He subsequently made a wheels-up forced landing in a field at 16.20hrs near "Newton, Yorkshire" when the fuel level ran low. The aircraft received minor damage. Their are nine different Newtons in Yorkshire.

Spitfire JL186 was built to contract B.981687/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Castle Bromwich and was flown to 45 M.U. at Kinloss on 28th March 1943. On 8th April 1943 it was collected by an ATA pilot based with 16 F.P.P. at Kirkbridge. It was forced landed and sustained damage during the flight south 8th April 1943 near Newton. Cat.B/FA damage was the damage assessment that saw it transported by road for a repair in works by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Castle Bromwich. On 30th June 1943 it was flown to 12 M.U. at Kirkbride. On 22nd July 1943 it was flown to 222 M.U. at High Ercall for packing and on 25th July 1943 it was on board SS Fort Rupert bound for North Africa. On 16th August 1943 it was received by 145 MU (AAU) Cazes airfield, Casablanca. On 30th November 1943 it was taken on charge by N.W. African Air Service Command with HQ based in Algiers. No history of service beyond this point is known. It was struck off charge on 26th April 1945.
