Halifax JD278 at Linton on Ouse airfield.
On the night of 16th / 17th September 1943 crew of this 429 Squadron aircraft was tasked with flying an operational flight to bomb a marshalling yard target at Mondane. The took off from Leeming airfield at 20.05hrs and released theor bomb load from 18,000 feet at 00.51hrs. Owing to poor weather many 429 Squadron aircraft were diverted to land at Thurleigh and landed there at 02.04hrs without incident. Once the weather improved slightly, and presumably the aircraft was refuelled the left Thurleigh to return to Leeming. As they flew north the weather must have deteriorated again as this aircraft attempted to land at Linton on Ouse. With visibility reduced with low cloud and with a cross wind, pilot made a poor approach to land. On landing at 15.30hrs the pilot noticed a group of men working close to the runway so applied the brakes but the aircraft ground looped, swung off the runway and the undercarriage collapsed.
