Halifax JD264 at Burn airfield.

On 21st October 1943 the crew of this 51 Squadron aircraft were undertaking a cross country training exercise and they landed at Burn airfield at just after midnight. The crew then began to taxi around the airfield but the aircraft ran into a drainage ditch just off the perimeter track. What the crew were not aware was that on landing thet should have turned right to taxi around the perimeter track on reaching the end of the runway. They turned left and into towards the unlit trench with a ground crew marshall being unaware what he was leading the aircraft toward. The aircraft sustained minor damage while one of the engines was almost certainly replaced.
