Halifax JB967 at Leeming airfield.
On the night of 3rd / 4th July 1943 this 408 Squadron was to be used to fly an operational flight to bomb Cologne. On take off at Leeming at 22.60hrs the aircraft began to swing off the runway. While the pilot was able to regain control and then take off it clipped the boundary fence and one of the main tyres burst. The crew continued to the target area and released their bomb load from 18,000 feet at 01.36hrs. Some 34 four pound bombs failed to release. At 05.38hrs the aircraft landed at Leeming but it swung off the runway on the flat tyre and may have suffered an undercarriage collapse.
