Halifax JB961 damaged by flak, returned to Melbourne airfield.

On the night of 13th / 14th May 1943 the crew of this 10 Squadron aircraft took off from Melbourne airfield at 23.43hrs to undertake an operational flight to bomb Bochum. Before they reached the target area the aircraft was held in searchlights for seven minutes which then resulted in a heavy flak barrage being directed up at the aircraft. They took evasive action to try and loose the search lights, releasing their bomb load from 11,000 feet at 02.08hrs over the Dortmund area as part of this. During this activity the aircraft received a number of flak burst hits in the wings, fuselage and bomb doors. The crew managed to fly the aircraft safely back to base and landed at Melbourne at 04.47hrs.
