I have been informed that a rumour exists of a Wellington making a forced landing on Ilkley Moor during the Second World War and landed reasonably intact. Sadly nothing more is known on the incident other than in a newspaper report which appeared locally in around 2000. The incident could relate to one of the other mishaps in the area during the war and the aircraft mis-identified. No further details are known. Had this been an aircraft that sustained damage there would be records available by 2026 that would confirm and identify it, and this has not come to light.
I have put this incident under 1943 purely because there were a lot of Wellingtons flying by this time but, if it is a real incident, it could have happened any time after 1939.
My thanks to Mr Andy Scull for this information and for sharing his research with me.
