Halifax HR939 damaged by flak, returned to Snaith airfield.

On the night of 10th / 11th August 1943 the crew of this 51 Squadron Halifax were undertaking an operational flight to bomb Nuremburg and had taken off from Snaith at 22.00hrs. The aircraft struck by flak over the target area and slight damage to the rudder fins was sustained. The crew released their bomb load over the target area from 17,500 feet and made a safe return to Snaith, landing at 05.27hrs.

Doug Milliken and Arthur Salvage were involved in the crash of Halifax DG421 at Pocklington on 18th June 1943 while training with 1663 HCU, they and their crew were posted to 51 Squadron on 4th July 1943. On 4th December 1943 they were flying Ops to Leipzig in Halifax HR732 when the aircraft failed to return and was recorded as missing. All the crew of the aircraft are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial as they have no known grave but Arthur Salvage's wife received his wedding ring from the German authorities in 1947 suggesting that his body was recovered and if correct then the location of where he was then buried is not known.

Arthur Salvage received his commission to the rank of P/O on probation on 19th August 1943.

Frederick Baker received a commission to the rank of P/O on probation on 25th August 1943.
