Halifax HR834 damaged by flak, returned to Snaith airfield.
This aircraft took off from Snaith at 23.29hrs on 22nd June 1943 to undertake an operational flight to bomb Mulheim. While on the run up to the target and while flying at 18,000ft this aircraft was hit from above by incendiaries dropped by an aircraft flying higher. Damage was caused to both main planes and the open bomb doors were also hit. The crew released their bomb load at 01.27hrs and made for home. The aircraft was also hit by flak. The crew were able to bring the aircraft safely back to base and landed at Snaith in the early hours of 23rd June 1943 at 04.35hrs. It was later found that a high explosive bomb had struck the leading edge of the starboard mainplane and bounced off; a narrow escape.

This crew were posted to 405 Squadron on 8th July 1943 and were killed on 2nd / 3rd August 1943 flying Halifax HR849 on Ops to Hamburg which was shot down by flak. All are buried in
Becklingen War Cemetery.
