Halifax HR748 damaged in the air, landed at Breighton airfield.

On 23rd / 24th September 1943 this 78 Squadron was flown on an operational flight to bomb Mannheim and took off from Breighton airfield at 18.44hrs. The crew released their bomb load from 17,000 feet at 22.05hrs but while over the target area the aircraft was struck from above by falling incendiary bombs dropped from a higher flying aircraft. The damage did not prevent the crew from flying back to Breighton where they landed at 01.56hrs.
