On 11th August 1943 this 10 Squadron aircraft swung on take off at Melbourne airfield when the crew were about to begin a night cross-country training flight. The undercarriage collapsed.
Pilot - F/Sgt Henry Edward Morgan Plant RAAF (413249).
Henry Plant was born on 27th March 1920 in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia and was the son of Edward James and Ethel Eliza Plant. He was working as a bank clerk and living in Gilgandra, New South Wales when he enlisted on 16th August 1941 in Sydney. After basic training in Australia he sailed to Canada to undertake pilot training where he gained his pilot's wings on 23rd October 1942. He then sailed for the UK in December 1942. On arrival in the UK he trained at 15 (P)AFU, 10 OTU and 1658 HCU before posting to 10 Squadron on 8th August 1943. He received a commission on 28th September 1943. Sadly he was killed on 22nd October 1943 while flying 10 Squadron Halifax HX174 on Ops to Kassel when the aircraft crashed in Germany. He is buried in Hanover War Cemetery. He had flown ten operational flights with 10 Squadron.
