Wellington HF464 at Leconfield airfield.
On 12th December 1943 the air speed indicator of this aircraft appeared to the pilot to be not working as it gathered speed for taking off from Leconfield. The pilot decided not to take off and attempted to slow the aircraft but he was unable to stop the aircraft in the remaining area of the airfield. The aircraft overshot and came to rest in a ploughed field. The aircraft received minor damage. The AM Form 1180 and also the AM Form 78 states that the aircraft was a 196 Squadron aircraft at this date, 196 Squadron were based at Leicester East and had just left Bomber Command. The pilot was a serving 466 Squadron pilot during December 1943 who were based at Leconfield. More information is required to gain the fuller picture of why the Wellington was at Leconfield and why a Halifax squadron pilot was flying it.
Pilot - F/Lt Fred Derek Algernon Ainsley RAFVR (128853).
