Wellington HE918 (possibly) damaged by flak, landed at Dalton airfield.
During the early hours of 27th April 1943 this 428 Squadron aircraft undertook an operational flight to bomb Duisburg and took off from Dalton at 00.18hrs. While approaching and then leaving the target area the aircraft was caught in a searchlight cone. The crew landed safely at Dalton at 06.41hrs. On his website Richard Koval lists that this aircraft was hit by flak and holes created in the wings, fuselage and fuel tanks. The squadron records do not list any damage but Richard must have got his information from somewhere so I will believe him and re-write this webpage when I locate it. If damage did occur then it was only Cat.A/FB as there is no mention of any greater damage listed on the aircraft's AM Form 78.
