Wellington HE731 at Acaster Malbis airfield.
On 18th October 1943 this A.F.E.E. aircraft was being used as a glider tug aircraft and was in the process of test flying with a glider when, soon after taking off from Sherburn in Elmet airfield, smoke and fumes began to enter the cockpit of the Wellington. At 17.15hrs the aircraft attempted a landing at Acaster Malbis airfield but in attempting to avoid a collision with a vehicle on the runway the aircraft overshot and ran into a ditch. The undercarriage then collapsed.
