Fairchild Argus EV797 at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.

On 12th February 1943 this aircraft and its pickets were lifted into the air by strong wind blowing across Sherburn in Elmet airfield and it dropped onto Argus FK342. Both aircraft sustained damage and were written off as a result.

This aircraft was built as a Fairchild UC-61 Forwarder and had initially been registered on the USAAF register as 41-38861. It was built to contract DA-173 by the Fairchild Aviation Corporation, at Hagerstown and was supplied to the RAF under the Lend Lease agreement, arriving by sea in the UK in June 1942. It was transported by road to Heston Aircraft Ltd. at Heston airfield for assembly and testing. The date it was taken on charge by 7 Ferry Pilot Pool at Sherburn in Elmet is not yet known. As a result of the damage sustained on 12th February 1943 Cat.E2/GA damage was the result of the damage assessment. It was not repaired.
