Spitfire EN948 at Pocklington airfield.
During the afternoon of 24th October 1943 this 234 Squadron aircraft was flown on a sector reconnaissance flight. The squadron was based at Hutton Cranswick airfield but owing to poor weather the pilot appears to have been diverted to land at Pocklington. At 15.45hrs the pilot was attempting to land at Pocklington airfield in very bad visibility but the runway in use became obstructed by a Thunderbolt. The airfield controller changed the runway in use and at 15.45hrs, while the pilot was attempting to line up with this new runway, the aircraft stalled just above the ground. A wing hit the ground and the aircraft was slightly damaged.
Pilot - F/O David Patrick George Edward Ferguson RAFVR (128857).
