Beaufighter EL389 at Catfoss airfield.

On the night of 28th / 29th November 1943 this aircraft was being flown on a night training flight in the general area around Catfoss airfield when one of the engines failed, the pilot went to make a hurried landing at Catfoss but because another aircraft was in the way a red very flare was fired to deny the Beaufighter making the landing. The Beaufighter pilot appears to have ignored the red flare because he probably believed there was little chance of overshooting or flying a circuit of the airfield with just one good engine so landed. The Beaufighter then collided with Lancaster JB116 that appears to have been parked on the edge of the airfield 9or may have been taxying around the airfield). The Beaufighter came off the worst, it was written off as a result of the damage sustained which included both engines being torn off and damage to the mainplanes and fuselage. The Lancaster had made a landing at Catfoss in thick fog in the early hours of 27th November 1943 on return from Ops to Berlin having been diverted from their home airfield of Skellingthorpe, it was later repaired.
