Lancaster EE124 at Lissett airfield.

On the night of 27th / 28th September 1943 the crew of this 50 Squadron aircraft were undertaking an operational flight to bomb Hannover. They took off from base of Skellingthorpe at 19.35hrs and released their load from 22.10hrs from 22,500 feet in good visibility. On their return to England the weather was poor and the crew became lost. This aircraft located and attempted a landing at Lissett airfield at 00.49hrs but at ninety degrees to the wind direction but the pilot was not warned of the cross wind. Unfortunately the aircraft was travelling too fast to stop and it ran off the runway into the overshoot area receiving damage. The 50 Squadron record book lists the aircraft as being EE120 while there is an AM Form 1180 for the incident that lists it as being EE124, I am inclined to believe the AM Form 1180 because the AM Form 78 states that on 28th September 1943 EE124 received a Cat.B damage assessment that saw it sent for a repair in works by A.V.Roe Ltd.
