Lancaster ED391 at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield.
On 15th January 1943 this 101 Squadron aircraft landed at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield at 15.00hrs after a short thirty five minute flight. While the pilot was taxying over a narrow bridge to a dispersal point the fin / rudder hit a brickwall that was part of the bridge as aircraft was turned. An investigation found that the bridge was too narrow and there was not enough clearance. The bridge was to be widened and white lines to be painted to assist pilots on the centre line. Minor Cat.A damage resulted to this Lancaster which was soon repaired on site.
Pilot - Sgt Ivan Henry Hazard RAFVR (1313768).
The pilot was later killed in the crash of Lancaster ED446 at Atwick, days after receiving the CGM for his actions on 14th February 1943 flying Lancaster ED377.
The AM Form 78 for Lancaster ED391 states that it was delivered to 100 Squadron on 13th December 1942 but whether this is correct is yet to be proven. It was with 101 Squadron on 15th January 1943 when it sustained minor Cat.A/FA damage on 15th January 1943. Once repaired it was transferred to 460 Squadron on 28th January 1943. The aircraft failed to return from Ops to Berlin on 30th March 1943 that saw all it's then crew killed. Cat.Em damage was recorded and the aircraft was struck off charge on 31st March 1943.
