Lancaster ED370 at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield.

On the night of 3rd / 4th February 1943 this aircraft this 101 Squadron aircraft this aircraft was used on an operational flight to bomb Edmund. The crew took off from Holme on Spalding Moor airfield at 18.00hrs but returned to base early at 21.45hrs because of icing to the rear guns and the starboard aileron. After landing at Holme on Spalding Moor at the aircraft was found to have damaged bomb doors that were possibly damaged after icing up. Minor Cat.Ac damage was the damage assessment.

Geoffrey Fisher was awarded the OBE and Hill awarded the MBE for their actions on 17th February 1943 in rescuing members of the crashed Lancaster ED374.


Lancaster ED370 was delivered as new to 101 Squadron on 14th December 1942. On landing from Ops on 4th February 1943 it was found to have slightly damaged bomb doors due to the effects of icing on them. Cat.Ac/FB damage was the damage assessment that was repaired on site. It was returned to 101 Squadron on 20th February 1943. On 27th May 1943 it's air speed indicator failed on take off, the pilot attempted to stop the aircraft but it ran into the boundary hedge and received minor cat.Ac/FA damage. It was repaired on site and returned to 101 Squadron on 3rd July 1943. It was again damaged to Cat.Ac/FB status on 23rd September 1943 (info needed). It was again repaired on site and returned to 101 Squadron on 9th October 1943. The aircraft was transferred to 103 Squadron on 13th October 1943 and then to 460 Squadron on 18th October 1943. Ten days later it was in need of a repair on site by A.V.Roe Ltd probably for damage found during an inspection. It was returned to 460 Squadron on 13th November 1943. On 27th November 1943 it failed to return from Ops to Berlin that cost all of it's then crew their lives. Cat.Em damage was recorded and the aircraft was struck off charge on 30th November 1943.
