Halifax EB180 near Marton le Moor.

At 11.07hrs on 19th December 1943 the crew of this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft were in the process of taking off from Dishforth airfield for a training flight and had picked up enough speed to become airborne when the flaps dropped which prevented it from leaving the ground. At high speed it ran through the overshoot area, across the A1 Great North Road and came to rest in a field opposite the airfield and not far from Marton le Moor almost certainly with the undercarriage collapsed. The crew escaped injury and presumambly walked back to the airfield. This was first mishap to an aircraft since 1664 H.C.U. arrived at Dishforth. The names of the crew are not known.

Pilot - Sgt C J Stewart RCAF (R/189025).
