Halifax EB136 at Croft airfield.

On the evening of 21st October 1943 the crew of this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft were to take off from Croft airfield at 20.40hrs to undertake a training flight. As the aircraft picked up speed it swung off the runway and struck a building on the boundary of the airfield. This building was unfortunately the pyrotechnic store and a fire developed in it, while all on the aircraft escaped injury the fire in the building gave those at Croft a pyrotechnic display and both the aircraft and building were destroyed. The pilot received injuries to his face.
