Beaufort DW951 near Myton on Swale.

On 8th March 1943 the crew of this aircraft were carrying out a cross country ferry training flight and while over the Easingwold area the aircraft suffered the starboard engine failing. The aircraft was flying at 1,500 feet at the time and the aircraft was nearky to ground level before the pilot was able to level out. In poor visibility the pilot attempted a forced landing near Myton Grange Farm, Myton on Swale at around 13.30hrs but crashed while doing so, the aircraft was badly damaged but the four crew escaped uninjured.

A basic reference to this incident has been found in the National Archives reference AIR38/232 and against the entry on the page the reference "C.1201/216" is quoted but I have not yet located what this refers to.

Beaufort DW951 was built to contract B136959/40 by the Bristol Aeroplane Co.Ltd. at Filton and was awaiting collection in December 1942. It was taken on charge by 301 F.T.U. at Lyneham shortly after but the date it arrived is not yet known. As a result of the crash on 8th March 1943 Cat.E/FA damage was the assessment and it was written off.
