Wellington DV888 at Finningley airfield.

At 16.40hrs on 1st May 1943 this 18 Operational Training Unit aircraft made a poor landing at Finningley airfield and damaged the port aileron.

Crew - Names unknown.


Wellington DV888 was built to contract B.124362/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd., at Hawarden and was flown to 46 MU at Lossiemouth on 13th May 1942. On 26th May 1942 it was taken on charge by 18 O.T.U. at Bramcote and moved with the unit to Finningley on 27th March 1943. As a result of the damage sustained there on 1st May 1943 Cat.A/FA damage was the assessment and it was repaired on site. On 5th June 1943 the aircraft was transferred to 21 OTU at Moreton in Marsh. On 7th July 1943 the aircraft's AM Form 78 states that it received a repair on site by a team from Vickers from Weybridge, probably not accident related. On 16th July 1943 the aircraft was returned to 21 OTU charge. On 30th July 1943 the port engine failed on take off at Moreton in Marsh and the pilot immediately force landed. The aircraft was badly damaged which saw Cat.E/FA damage recorded and it was struck off charge on 7th August 1943.
