On 15th May 1943 the crew of this 21 Operational Training Unit aircraft were undertaking what was described as a transit flight and during which they had landed at Doncaster airfield. The aircraft then took off from Doncaster at 16.12hrs but suffered an engine failure just after leaving the ground, the aircraft failed to maintain height and it either crashed or was landed into a wood near Edlington three minutes later. This may be the incident that the creator of the memorial at Edlington believed was Lancaster W4904.
