Wellington DV509 at Finningley airfield.
During the night of 4th / 5th February 1943 this 18 Operational Training Unit aircraft crashed on landing at Finningley airfield and sustained minor damage.
Crew - Names unknown.
Wellington DV509 was built to contract 124362/40 by Vickers Armstrong at Chester and was received by 44 MU on 26th December 1941. It was intially taken on charge by 101 Squadron on 9th January 1942 then passed to 419 Squadron on 28th January 1942 and to 214 Squadron on 23rd March 1942. It received battle damage on 25th March 1942 which was repaired on site. On 1st May 1942 it transferred to 16 OTU and was slightly damaged on 21st September 1942 to Cat.Ac/FA status. It was repaired on site and returned to 16 OTU but was then transferred to 18 OTU on 29th December 1942. As a result of the damage sustained on 4th February 1943 minor Cat.Ac/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was repaired on site by a team from Vickers at Weybridge. Once repaired it was returned to 18 OTU on 27th March 1942. It was later transferred to 21 OTU on 23rd May 1943 abns served there until passing to 18 MU on 7th April 1944. Here it was stored and was eventually struck off charge on 21st March 1946 with it being scrapped on 31st August 1946.
