Lancaster DS686 at Linton on Ouse airfield.

On 17th August 1943 the crew of this 426 Squadron Lancaster were one of nine tasked with flying operational flights to bomb the V-2 factory at Peenemunde. As this aircraft was being taxied around the airfield at Linton on Ouse prior to taking off this aircraft ran of the perimeter track and, unbeknown to the crew, clipped a cement mixer with the starboard outer propellor. The engine stopped and the crew, believing that it had simply stopped, restarted it. After being given clearance to take off the crew set out for the flight to Peenemunde but not long after crossing the coastline the starboard outer engine began to run very rough. They abandoned the flight, jettisoned their bomb load and returned to Linton on Ouse. After making a safe landing it was realised that the starboard outer propeller has sustained damage prior to taking off.
