Typhoon DN243 at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.
On 27th January 1943 this 183 Squadron aircraft lost power in the Sherburn in Elmet area, as the runway was obstructed the pilot made a belly
landing in field nearby but the aircraft was badly damaged. The pilot survived though his name is not yet known. 183 Squadron formed at Church
Fenton on 1st November 1942 but took until April 1943 to become fully operational. This incident does not appear to be listed in the squadron records.
Built to contract ACFT/943 by Gloster Aircraft Ltd. at Hucclecote, Typhoon DN243 was awaiting collection in October 1942. It was taken on charge by 183 Squadron at Church Fenton in December 1942 but the date it arrived on the squadron is not listed in their record book, possibly on 19th December 1942 when two unidentified Typhoons arrived from 18 M.U. . Other arrivals are listed by serial number within their records. As a result of this accident on 27th January 1943 the aircraft was written off with Cat.E2/FA damage being the damage assessment.
