Spitfire BM628 at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.
At 16.20hrs on 14th January 1943 this 316 Squadron aircraft made an approach to land at Sherburn in Elmet airfield as part of a training exercise and in bad visibility. In the pilot's haste to land he forgot to check the undercariage was locked down and it then collapsed on landing.

Henryk Starzynski was killed on 28th March 1943 with 602 Squadron when Spitfire AR468 crashed off Ile de Batz, an island off Roscoff, Brittany, France. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Polish Memorial at Northolt.
