Halifax BB308 at Marston Moor airfield.
During the afternoon of 8th July 1943 this 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was being flown on a training flight. The trainee bomber pilot misjudged the landing speed at Marston Moor, instead of flying an overshoot and trying another approach to land he landed. The aircraft landed too fast and overshot at 16.08hrs, it then struck an M.T. vehicle parked on a dispersal pan. Sadly the driver of the vehicle sustained serious head injuries and died.
Pilot - Sgt Robert Gerard Heuston RAFVR (1340486).
Ground casualty - ACW2 Jean Scargill WAAF (2110495), aged 20, husband of Marske by the Sea. Buried Kirkleatham Churchyard, Yorkshire.
Jean Scargill's grave. My thanks to David Thompson for sending this photograph for inclusion on this webpage.
