Halifax BB274 at Topcliffe airfield.
During the evening of 20th August 1943 this 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit was flown on a training flight. During the flight the flight engineer appears to have struggled to keep the port inner engine running and it was eventually shut down. At 23.50hrs the aircraft made a landing at Topcliffe with a ground fog posing a problem with visibility. The pilot attempted a three engined landing but the landing was made tail-first which damaged the tail wheel assembly.
Pilot - Sgt Cyril Campbell Gofton RAFVR (1095873).
