On 8th April 1943 this 231 Squadron aircraft crashed on landing at Clifton airfield.
Pilot - F/O James Edward Kingston RAFVR (123227).
James Kingston received a commission to the rank of P/O on probation on 20th June 1942 from the rank of Acting Sgt. He later received promotions to F/O on 20th December 1942 and F/Lt on 20th June 1944. On 23rd April 1949 he resigned his commission of F/Lt in the RAFVR.
Tomahawk AH838 was built to contract British Purchasing Contract F-273 by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation at Buffalo, New York, USA and was transported by sea, arriving at Liverpool Dock in May 1942. The aircraft was assembled and tested at No.1 AAU at Speke before being flown to MU storage. The aircraft was first taken on charge by 239 Squadron at Detling before being transferred to 231 Squadron at Maghaberry (though the dates of transfer are not yet known). 231 Squadron moved to Longkesh on 20th November 1942, Nutts Corner on 2nd January 1943 and Clifton on 21st March 1943. As a result of the minor mishap at Clifton on 8th April 1943 Cat Ac/FA damage was the damage assessment that saw it repaired on site. The aircraft later appears on charge with 30 O.T.U. at Hixon and then 1658 (B) D.T. Flight at Ossington but this unit ceased operating the type in April 1944. The aircraft was struck off charge on 11th April 1944.
