Spitfire AD508 damaged in air, landed at Hutton Cranswick airfield.
During the afternoon of 4th May 1943 several aircraft 308 Squadron aircraft flew an air firing practice on either targets or towed drogues over the sea. At 15.45hrs a collision occurred between Spitfires BM328 and AD508 around half a mile from Hutton Cranswick airfield. The pilot Spitfire AD508 was able to keep control of his aircraft and make hurried landing at Hutton Cranswick but the aircraft sustained minor damage. The pilot of the other aircraft baled out. The combined AM Form 1180 was critical of the role of the section leader played in this incident, stating that the section took off without permission and that he led his section badly. It does not name him.
Pilot - F/O Zbigniew Jan Wlodzimierz Frackiewicz PAF (P/0923).
On 19th November 1943 F/O Frackiewicz was flying Spitfire BS411 on an operational sweep "Ramrod 325" when the engine failed over France, he force-landed in enemy-occupied France and saw out the rest of the War as a PoW. After the war he settled in the UK, he applied for and was granted British Naturalisation in December 1950 and at that time was living in York.
Spitfire AD508 was built to contract B.981687/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd, at Castle Bromwich and was flown to 38 MU at Llandow on 6th November 1941. On 24th November 1941 the aircraft was taken on charge by 74 Squadron at Llanbedr. This unit then moved to Long Kesh on 24th January 1942 and to Atcham on 24th March 1942. On 8th April 1942 the aircraft was transferred to 232 Squadron. It then moved with the unit to Llanbehr on 15th May 1942, Ayr on 21st May 1942, Merston on 25th June 1942, Llanbedr on 8th July 1942, Turnhouse on 3rd August 1942, Debden on 11th August 1942, Gravesend on 14th August 1942, Debden on 20th August 1942 and to Turnhouse on 1st September 1942. On 24th September 1942 the aircraft was flown to Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at South Marston for fuel systems modifications. With this complete on 12th October 1942 it was taken on charge by 308 Squadron at Heston. This unit then moved to Northolt on 29th October 1942 and to Church Fenton on 29th April 1942. As a result of the mishap on 4th May 1943 Cat.B/FA damage was the assessment. A repair was then carried out in a works factory but the location is not known. After repair the aircraft is reported to have served with 66 Squadron, 340 Squadron, F.L.S., 57 O.T.U. and 595 Squadron at Aberporth. On 3rd October 1945 the aircraft was converted to Ground Instructional Airframe 5594M. The following month it was despatched to No.1 Packed Aircraft Transit Pool at Southport. On 11th March 1946 the aircraft transferred to the Armee De L'Air, France and after this nothing more is known.
