Spitfire AA922 at Catterick airfield.

During the evening of 2nd April 1943 this 401 Squadron was one of three that undertook a formation flying exercise. The aeroplanes took off from Catterick at 18.05hrs and the pilots carried out the training. On landing at Catterick at 19.00hrs the runway was unservicable so this Spitfire landed on a rough part of the aerodrome grass. One of the undercarriage legs broke on bumpy ground, while the pilot held the aircraft up as long as possible it eventually settled on the damaged wing and the main undercarriage leg was torn off. The scribe of the AM Form 1180 has writing that is very hard to read. This is my interpretation of what it says.
